Hydration lubrication by lipid-bilayer-functionalized nanofluidics

Major Contributions

1. Highlighted a liquidized lipid-bilayer coating on semiconductor-microfabricated nanopores that couples ultrahigh surface charge density with hydration lubrication, addressing the key challenge of controlling solid–liquid interfacial properties at the nanometre scale.

2. Explained how interfacial slip combined with high surface charge enhances ion transport, ion selectivity and charge separation, thereby boosting osmotic power generation from salinity gradients via charge-selective membranes.

3. Pointed to lipid-bilayer-functionalized nanofluidics, which reached an osmotic power density of ~51.4 kW m⁻² at membrane scale in the highlighted study (Teng et al., Nat. Energy 2026), as a promising route to scalable blue-energy harvesting.
